Echo Park Urban Discovery May 2023
Elysian Park and surrounding neighborhood
Sunday, May 7, 2023
Ah, the joys of Elysian Park at Cinco de Mayo! Despite some major traffic snarls due to the crowds and a last minute notice to try a different parking lot, our participants managed to find us at the usual tables. We did delay the mass start by 15 minutes to give everyone a little extra breathing room. Kim Pincus used a combination of old and new points for the course and some did not get fully vet. Below is a full listing of all points that were given special consideration. If it's not on that list, then you had to have the right answer to get points. Timekeepers did not write down the seconds associated with each finish, but it was assumed there were some when calculating the late penalty.
Rex Winterbottom, visiting from the BAOC area, had the top score with a strategy that covered most of the west side of the map but not many controls in Zone 1. Alexandra Bridarolli had the top female score, focusing on the northwest part of the map.
Scoring notes (E is any indication that you couldn't find the control):
155 - (color of drinking fountain) This was intended to be a totally different question. Credit was given to anyone who put any answer.
299 - (HiFi Deli Giraffe) The circle is in the wrong place. Credit was given for the correct answer as well as to those who put E.
322 - (driveway gate color) A lot of people had difficulty with this one. We gave credit for anything including E.
338 - (plaque on fence) This was missing. Credit given for E only.
357 - (faded sign on chain link fence) This is now mostly covered by ivy. We gave credit for both the correct answer and for E.
399 - (before entering call...) This was missing. Credit given for E only.
432 - (steps to the trail) There are 4 steps from the pavement up to a small trail, but then 4 more steps on that trail up to a larger trail. A or C (8 or 4) accepted.
436 - (Who is...) This was missing. Credit given for E only.
499 - (Animal on sidewalk) This was missing. Credit given for E only.
